Mightnight Target is one of my most anticipated books this year and I am torn! I’m not sure if two romances CAN share a book at all. And yeah, this book has TWO of the romances that fans of this series have been waiting for. In my opinion, though, the two romances are TOO BIG for this ONE book!
Let me explain.
This book is about Jim’s daughter, Cate who he rescued in Midnight Action (Jim and Noelle’s HEA) and the rookie, Ash. I felt the chemistry between these two in Midnight Action, but since Cate was really young, it was very smart for Elle Kennedy to set this story a few years after Midnight Action, where Cate is now legal. This also features Liam and Sully’s HEA (this one is M/M). Liam and Sully have had sparks fly between them since possibly the first book in this series. As someone who doesn’t read M/M, I was WAITING for their HEA.
The Stakes are HIGH
This book also brings everyone on Jim’s A-team to work together on a revenge mission. In Midnight Target,
Jim gets injured while saving his daughter. He is partly in a coma during the book and Noelle starts to unravel.
And there a lot of disturbing things that goes on in here and I believe Elle Kennedy does it masterfully.
The Downside
As I’ve said, there are TWO HEAs that I think, compete with each other. I do like the alternate POV (told in third-person) between Cate, Ash, Sully and Liam. But still! I am just not a fan of TWO HEAs in ONE book where the TWO couples are MAIN CHARACTERS!
Too Distracting
As I’ve said above, the two HEAs were too distracting for me. And as much as I was rooting for both of these couples, I felt it was too much of a cop-out. Also, since Midnight Target is the LAST book in the Killer Instincts series, I feel that Elle Kennedy just wanted to write this for her fans (which I am ABSOLUTELY grateful for). On the other hand, it would have been better to have the other couple be a novella.
The Suspense and the Action!
I actually LOVED the backdrop of the story. It felt real for me. Especially with the current world climate. Elle Kennedy can also write scenes that are very detailed and I actually felt that I can see the whole scene! Yes, there are action scenes. Yes, they are well done. YES, it kept me on the edge of my seat!
Also, I thought the villain was really EVIL here! BUT then the end was MEH! I mean, he basically got killed because
his wife got shot and killed?!
He is SUPPOSED to be really evil and he was just brought down by that?
I know, family and all…
but – I wanted more action, I guess?
Woah, Sexy times!!!!
There were a few scenes for both couples. And they were HAWT as hell! Yes, I even include the M/M scenes because they were tastefully done! Mind you, this was the first time I read an M/M book and read through the sexy times. Also, this is not erotic romance but it IS a tad bit steamy and very well written!
The Verdict
I enjoyed Midnight Target. But really, I think there two romances really was too much for this book in that the romantic development felt too rushed. Yes, Sully and Liam had their romance already in the previous books, but still, THIS WAS their HEA. So, it did compete with Cate and Ash’s romance.
Recommendations
If you are a fan of the Killer Instincts series, you definitely should read this book. If you haven’t read the series yet and do not want to read the previous 6 books, please read Midnight Action first, so you get Cate’s backstory and also Jim and Noelle’s romance. Midnight Action is also my FAVORITE Killer Instincts book.
[rating-report]
I don’t really enjoy two romances in ONE book.
What are your thoughts on that? Do you have any book recs with this trope?
