MY THOUGHTS
“The ending was just……!!!”
So, I am in a bind as to how I felt about this book. On the one hand, I really enjoyed it. The plot was fast paced and felt like a quick listen, too (it had lesser chapters than the usual YA novel) and despite the fact that it had fewer chapters, the last book of the trilogy managed to answer a few questions.
That being said, I HATED the ending. I mean
Day has amnesia! ugrrrhhh!
and June
had to give him up because she martyred herself for him…. yadda yadda yadda
!! So I just can’t get past it.
Let’s talk about June. In this book, she becomes the Princeps-Elect and is in the running to become the Princeps. The last Princeps was Andon’s mother so….it seems like a given that if she becomes the Princeps, she will become the Electors wife. I also did not really connect much with June this time. I felt she became a little TSTL for my taste and I thought she really didn’t deserve to be a Princeps-Elect. Basically, I agreed with the other Princeps-Elect. June didn’t really show any talents or skill to go into politics. On a good note, June did admit that she wasn’t the right person for that position.
Now Day, on the other hand
is dying
so he gave up June in Prodigy because he didn’t want her to deal with his issues. He becomes an “I don’t give a shit” teenager and basically just sulks and
goes to treatments (his illness is a side effect of what they did to him when he “lost” the Trial.
But he still loves June. Still, I did not really felt his connection to June in this book. I did not feel that their relationship developed further.
Despite the character flaws, I actually enjoyed the book. There were a few eye-rolling parts but it was okay. There were also a few parts that really touched me but nothing that made the whole book better.
Let’s talk about the ending. I HATED IT! I get that it was left hanging to make the readers guess and make their own conclusions about what happened BUT still! June and Andon also started dating and I did not like that because I didn’t like Andon at all. So June and Day meet again after 10 years…. AFTER 10 years! But then the end left me hanging. I knew they would end up being together but….. I don’t know. I just felt that the ending was just wrong.
THOUGHTS ON THE AUDIO
Narrator: Mariel Stern & Steven Kaplan
Their narration was still superb and definitely helped me enjoy the book better had I read it instead.
