Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl
formerly hosted at The Broke and the Bookish
Happy Tuesday, Wormies! I submit to you books that I initially DNF’d but I ended up LOVING! See, I’m one of those readers who DNF a few chapters in when a book is not catching my attention. But for one reason or another, I picked them up again and ended up loving them!
Some of these books have ended up being 5-star reads! So, I have since learned that even when I DNF a book, that doesn’t mean I will never read them again!
Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean
[rating stars=”five-stars”]
Nine Rules to Break when Romancing a Rake is one of my favorite Sarah MacLean books but I actually DNF’d this book! I picked this up again about a year later and I fell in love! Calie is one of my favorite heroines and Nine Rules is now one of my all-time fave books!
The Duke and I by Julia Quinn
[rating stars=”four-stars”]
I read The Duke and I last year and I really enjoyed it. In fact, I was able to read the other Bridgerton books. But did you know that I picked this up YEARS ago? I remember reading a few chapters at the library while reviewing for the NCLEX (I KNOW, I should have been studying) and I ended up not finishing it. In fact, it was unmemorable for me that I never bothered picking it up. I’ve always seen a lot of readers rave about this series, so I decided to pick it up again. And I was not disappointed.
Irresistible You by Kate Meader
[rating stars=”four-stars”]
I don’t remember when I listened to Irresistible You on audiobook but I HATED the narrator. I could only listen to two chapters before I gave up. However just last month, I picked it up again and despite STILL hating the narrator, I ended up enjoying this book.
Protecting What’s His by Tessa Bailey
[rating stars=”four-stars”]
Last year, I read my very first Tessa Bailey book and I enjoyed it so much! I then picked up Protecting What’s His and I thought it was meh and I ended up not finishing the book. Fast forward to last month, where I binge read Tessa Bailey and basically fell in love with her dirty talking alpha makes and I ended up enjoying this book.
Roomies by Christina Lauren
[rating stars=”five-stars”]
When I found out Christina Lauren was signing at The Ripped Bodice, I decided to purchase Roomies but it was a sloooow read. I temporarily put it on hold and didn’t purchase the audiobook version until this year and absolutely FELL IN LOVE WITH IT! This book is emotional and has awesome character development. WOW!
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
[rating stars=”four-stars”]
When I started reading YA, I picked up Throne of Glass and thought it was meh. I decided to DNF this until I picked up the audiobook version. I finally finished it and enjoyed it so much! I mean, this first book wasn’t as good as the next 3 books. However, I am slooowly losing interest with this series.
Scarlet by Marissa Meyer
[rating stars=”five-stars”]
I read Cinder when the first 3 books were already out and I thought it was okay. I picked up Scarlet and ended up DNFing it. A year after that, I listened to the audiobook version, and ABSOLUTELY FELL IN LOVE WITH THE WHOLE SERIES! This series is one of my favorites, in fact, even Pierre read it so we were able to discuss this series in detail!
Starflight by Melissa Landers
[rating stars=”four-stars”]
Starflight was another DNF until I picked it up again and fell in love with Dorian and Solara! This book is amazing and the crew of the Banshee was so fun and amazing, they reminded me of the Millennium Falcon crew!
Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
[rating stars=”four-stars”]
Pierre and I read Shadow and Bone together but I ended up not finishing it. We discussed this book a little and so I decided to pick up the audiobook version and enjoyed it! I haven’t finished the series, though.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
[rating stars=”four-stars”]
When I heard that they were making a movie based on the book The Hunger Games, I decided to read it. Well, what do you know, I didn’t like it and DNF’d after 3 chapters. I picked up the audiobook version AFTER I saw the first movie and ended up enjoying the trilogy!
As you can see, it is quite obvious that I have only finished most of these books because of audiobooks! I love audiobooks and it has really helped me enjoy books that I normally would have DNF’d.
Have you read any of these books? Have you DNF’d a book and picked it up in a different formate and ended up enjoying it?
Throne of Glass has made it to a few lists this week, and I LOVE Nine Rules to Break-one of my favorites-aren’t you glad you picked it back up!! It is one of my all time favorites also!! Great list!
Thanks Joann! Yeah, I LOVE Nine Rules so much and have reread this multiple times already! Glad I picked it back up!
I adore Kate Meader’s series, and have put off the last book, because I am sad to see it end. I love all that is ToG. I admire that you can listen to SFF books on audio. I have trouble follow stories that are too complex.
I’m definitely finishing this series! I’m so happy that they are on audio because it’s easier for me to listen as compared to reading 🙂
Nice! I’ve done that a few times, gone back to a book I DNF’d. In fact I have a few I kinda want to go back to, but who knows when I will?? Starflight and The Hunger Games were both books I liked. But not necessarily right away!

True! I’ve learned that DNFing something doesn’t mean I won’t read it in the future! I also think that it depends on your feelings/mood at the time of reading.
Love your spin on this week’s topic! I am so glad you picked these books back up and enjoyed them. Sometimes we just have to do that to appreciate the books in question. They don’t always come into our lives at the right time or however you wanna say it. Great list.
Thanks, Jessica! I am also a mood reader so it may have something to do with my mood when I initially picked up these books. 🙂
