Let’s talk about anything bookish!
Happy Monday, Wormies! This week, I wanted to talk about the about page. Does anybody every bother reading it? Do you even read it? I honestly do!
It seems like every blog has an about page, right? But how many bloggers actually read it? I don’t keep track of my about page stats (maybe I should) so I’m not sure how many bloggers actually read my about page.
I am a fan of the about page! Especially when it’s bloggers that I follow! Does that sound creepy? I don’t think so! It’s not like I’m going stalker mode!
Getting to know the blogger as a friend
Since I only interact with bloggers through Twitter, Instagram, or blog comments, I wouldn’t really know who I am talking to. Reading the About Me page helps me get to know the blogger on a deeper level. In fact, I like to use their names while commenting on their post! In this way, it makes me feel like I am having a conversation with a friend. And I’d like to think that we are all friends here. I know it’s a little naive of me to think that, but I do.
A face to the name
Some of the About Pages have photos! Yes, I totally understand why some bloggers don’t want to show their faces for security reasons, it’s still nice to see those bloggers who show their photos.
Also, shelfies! And maybe a tour of their shelves/part of their room? Still, another way to get to know bloggers better!
Book recommendations
A lot of book bloggers include their favorite genres or favorite books on their About Me page. This is a great way to find AWESOME new reads! I’ve actually found awesome reads this way.
Plus, you may see your favorite reads on their favorite reads list so this ultimately is another way for you to spark up a discussion.
Oh them hobbies
Like most book bloggers, reading isn’t all we do. RIGHT? I also want to find out bloggers who have the same hobbies as me (sort of), and this is an awesome way to build your friendship. Reading the About Me actually helped me find the AWESOME Secret Sister Project (#otspsecretsister) hosted by Amy, Alyssa, and Brittany.
Cat photos!
For some reason, there are a lot of bloggers (well, that I know of anyway) that have cats! AND they usually add photos of them on the About Me page! I have two wonderful cats (one of which is the EVIL KAT) and I love looking at cat photos! This is another way to find new friends! Plus, I just can’t get enough of cat photos!
Do you read the About Page? What have you discovered while reading the About Page?

I love learning where bloggers live!
OH, I missed that, Terri! Definitely love reading about that!
I do tend to read the About Me page before I follow a blog because a lot of bloggers list their favourite books. I like to see if we’re going to have similar tastes in books, and I’m always super excited if I see one of my favourites on there! 🙂
Laura recently posted…Why do some books take so long to read?
Me too!!! It’s just soooo sooo awesome “meeting” someone through favorite books! And yes, it gives me ALL THE FEELS when I see a blogger have the same faves as I do! haha 🙂
Cat photos are the best!
I also like learning about the blogger’s general likes and favorite books and genres. It helps me decide if I want to follow the blog.

<3 cat photos! haha
I love reading about me page! It’s the first thing I do when I come across a new blog (but I haven’t checked yours bc too excited to comment :P). Reading an about me page gives me insight to a blogger’s life. I think everything shows in it, like.. who this person is, what books they like, their hobbies and passions, their writing style, and basically everything. I’m on stalker mode all the time (but not the creepy one!!) so I’m always curious 😛 I even used some about me checklist when I wrote mine haha great post! 😀
Puput @ Sparkling Letters recently posted…It’s NOT COOL to Hate on Books You Haven’t Read!
Thanks, Puput! It is kind of stalking BUT also not the creepy kind! Some of the bloggers I follow are those that I follow because of an awesome About Me page! LOL
Yes, I always read about pages for new blogs I discover. It helps me get to know the author of the blog and factors in my decision on whether I want to follow them. Here’s my about page: http://opinionatedbooklover.com/about-me/. It has a lot of the things you mentioned: photo, bio, favorite books, other interests. I spent some time on it because I wanted my readers to get a good sense of who I am. I’m off to read your about page now! 🙂

Thanks, Kate! I agree that it is one of the factors I look to in following a blog 🙂 I also spend a lot of time writing mine. In fact, it has gone through a LOT of revisions. LOL
Off to read your about page!
I DO like to read the About pages! Mine is “under construction”- in my own mind, not in practice- and I have ideas to update it with. Maybe your post will be the push I need to finally DO IT. I want to it’s just… time 😉 I love to know more about the bloggers, and see pictures and all that jazz. AND, I think I am more likely to visit people if I get to know them, so it helps on many levels! This is an awesome post, now off to revamp my About page! 😀

DO IT SHANNON!!!! hahaha 🙂 I’d like to think that the About page is ALWAYS under construction! Let me know once you have updated your page! I’d LOVE to see!
I love reading the about page whenever I visit a new blog! It just helps to get to know the blogger a little better, get a better feel for who they are, what they like, etc. It makes it feel more personal on what is otherwise a rather impersonal form of communication, you know? Each person’s blog is like their online home, and I feel like I’m intruding if I know nothing about them! Pictures help make it more personal too. I also like to see if I have the same taste as people in books, so I like if they mention what genres they read most somewhere on their blog. So yeah, I like about pages 😀

ohh I never really thought of it as home, Kristen! But you are def right. IT IS our online home!!
I of course had to pop over and read your About Me page right away–it’s adorable! I agree that it’s really nice to get some sort of sense of the person behind the blog.
Thanks, Wendy! I’ve had multiple revisions on it… the first ones were sort of meh… haha 🙂
Yes! I do love About Me pages on blogs, and I read them to get to know a blogger. You just reminded me to add pictures of my shelves, what a great idea! Oh and my animals. Great post, great points here!

Thanks, Karen! I actually DON’T have a photo of my shelves! bahahaha 🙂 So….I guess I’ll have to add those in!
I really need to make an About Me page. I have a little About Me blurb on my sidebar, but I’ve been meaning to expand it for a long time. One of these days …
Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction recently posted…September Wrap-Up Round-Up Giveaway
OHHHH YES PLEASE DO! I know some blogger don’t want to share a lot of info because of privacy concerns but I think I have tried to leave out as much personal info as I can… 🙂
Let me know when you finally make your About Me page, Nicole! I wanna read! 😉
I generally only read them when I am specifically looking for information about the blogger’s name and/or location. If that info is on the sidebar then it’s unlikely I’ll visit the About page.
I am bookmarking this post for reference the next time I’m upgrading my blog.

Thanks for bookmarking this post! 🙂 Some bloggers take time writing an in-depth About Page and I am one of them! It’s fun to write AND read the About Page.. 🙂
Let me know once you update your About Me page so I can visit! 😉
I do read the About Me page when checking out a new blog – for all of the idea you mention!
I think I’ve included everything on your list, except the cat photos. I have no cats at the moment, sadly.
That’s okay, Lory! Maybe it’s because I’m a cat person, I see cats everywhere?! LOL
I love cats too! Other people in my house are allergic, though, so I can’t have any. Maybe I should adopt a virtual blog cat?
Lory @ Emerald City Book Review recently posted…How do you build a following for an event?
ahahaha YEAH YOU CAN! 🙂 I think there are apps for that now! I wish I had a dog.. but with us working most of the time, I would feel really bad leaving them alone in the house.. 🙁
I’ve never taken the about page into consideration when I visit a blog, though I do have one for my own blog. I should take the time to read those pages, but never thought about in the way you do. It is nice to know a bloggers true name and also other things they are interested in or what book got them hooked into reading/blogging. Thank you for the great post.
I really need to look at my own About Me page. I wrote it so many years ago that I don’t remember what it says. I only read bloggers’ About Me pages when I find a blog that I really, really like. I should probably get in the habit of reading them because it’s fun to learn about the person behind the blog.
Aj @ Read All The Things! recently posted…Discussion: I Don’t Review ARCs
It is! Admittedly, I don’t read ALL about pages but I really read them about 90% of the time, especially if I love the blog or I find an interesting article on the blog!
Heck, I love to read the about page of small businesses! 🙂
